Postura no trapézioHarness stance

O trapézio segura a força. The harness takes the pull. The arms only steer. It is the same stance on the sand, in the body drag, in the waterstart and riding: learn it once, use it always.

Parte 1Part 1

O corpo, visto de ladoThe body, seen from the side

The wind comes from the left, the kite is on the right. Compare the three stances and watch what a gust does to each. The white dot is your centre of gravity.

Parte 2Part 2

Os 7 pontos da posturaThe 7 points of the stance

The numbers match the scene above, in the right stance.

1Olhe para frenteLook aheadCabeça erguida, olhando para onde você vai. Não para o kite e não para os pés.Head up, looking where you are going. Not at the kite and not at your feet.
The whole trunk leans back like a plank. Not just the shoulders.
Elbows bent, hands relaxed on the bar. The arms only steer; the harness holds the pull.
4Lombar redondaRounded lower backEncaixe a lombar no trapézio, glúteo e abdômen firmes. Nada de arquear as costas como no surf.Tuck the lower back into the harness, glutes and abs tight. No arching like in surfing.
It is your centre of gravity (belly and hips) that goes back, as if sitting down on a chair.
6Joelhos dobradosKnees bentJoelhos flexionados absorvem as rajadas e as ondas. Pernas esticadas travam e te jogam para frente.Bent knees soak up gusts and chop. Straight legs lock up and tip you forward.
7Peso nos calcanharesWeight on the heelsOs calcanhares fazem a força contra o kite. The heels push against the kite. On the water, that is what makes the board's edge bite.
Parte 3Part 3

You take a gust without falling: you slide a little on your heels and stay firm.
Leaning back, the board's edge bites into the water. That is what lets you ride and, later, go upwind.
Em V ou nos braçosIn a V or on the armsA prancha fica plana, você vai em direção ao kite, as linhas afrouxam e você perde o controle. E os braços cansam em minutos. The board goes flat, you drift toward the kite, the lines go slack and you lose control. And the arms are done in minutes.
Primeira aulaFirst lessonQuase todo mundo erra isso no começo. Treine na areia até virar automático.Almost everyone gets this wrong at first. Practise on the sand until it is automatic.
Parte 4Part 4

Treino na areiaPractice on the sand

Always with the instructor next to you, a small kite and light wind.

  1. Engate e solte a barraHook in, bar outChicken loop no gancho, leash preso, kite às 12h. Barra solta: quase nenhuma força.Chicken loop on the hook, leash on, kite at 12. Bar out: almost no pull.
  2. Sente no trapézioSit in the harnessO instrutor leva o kite um pouco para o lado e a força aumenta. The instructor moves the kite a little to the side and the pull grows. Knees bent, hips back, until you feel your lower back resting in the harness.
If nothing changes, the harness is holding you. If you get pulled forward, you were holding with your arms.
Se for demais, solte a barra. When the pull rises, don't straighten your arms: drop your hips and let your heels slide in the sand. If it is too much, let the bar out.
